BSB stays in the class of 2011, as well as staying in the outfield in our next player amongst the top 30 Division III position players to watch in 2010. Ohio Wesleyan Battlin’ Bishop Zach Frentsos is the latest student-athlete coming off of an all-conference 2009 season which saw gaudy stats compile up and unbelievable play displayed proving he too belongs on the list of the division’s best.
He didn’t win a gold glove, he didn’t slug a handful of home runs out of the park, he didn’t steal two dozen bases, he isn’t 6’3, 225 nor is he 5’8,150. At 6’0,170 he simply produced. And continued to produce.
A casual fan might not notice the abilities of Zach Frentsos if they were to catch a single Ohio Wesleyan game. Average in stature, and not extraordinaire in any of the jaw-dropping aspects, but make no mistake, Frentsos is a baseball player.
The player who has a knack for getting on base. The player who delivers when the team needs a clutch hit. The play who will get the job done in the field making the routine plays consistently, while flashing the leather here and there. If Frentsos flew under the radar the previous two seasons, we hate to be the bearer f bad news, but opposing North Coast Athletic Conference teams, take notice. You’ve been warned.
In 2009 the Delaware native of Hayes High School, would have a stellar season for the Delaware located Ohio Wesleyan Bishops. The son of assistant coach Fody Frentsos who himself was a four-time letterwinner at OWU, the younger Frentsos capped a season that would make both father and coach proud garnering first-team All-NCAC honors, while being named a third-team All-Mideast selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
For the year Frentsos would lead Wesleyan with a .409 average; going 56-for-137, score 29 runs, pick up 12 doubles, leg out three triples, hit a home run and drive in 33 runs. The .562 slugging percentage was matched with a .453 on-base percentage for the left-handed hitting centerfielder who was the Bishops’ everyday three-hole hitter.
The 2009 success wasn’t a shock to followers of the Wesleyan program. Already with a leg up on most with the family ties that produced a strong baseball IQ and skill set, as a freshman Frentsos stepped into the role of the everyday leftfielder.
During his first collegiate spring Frentsos batted .309 while appearing in 46 games. Included in the 47 hits were nine doubles, three triple, and one home run. Frentsos drove in 27 runs, while scoring 25 and stole nine bases. His rookie campaign ended with a spot on the NCAC All-Tournament team.
With Frentsos and the previously highlight DiBiasio at the heart of the order, OWU will remain the favorite to win the NCAC West. OWU is coming off of an 24-16 season and in 2010 will look to reach te NCAA DIII tourney for the first time since 2007. Frentsos should have another outstanding season, and hopefully a postseason trip will add further exposure to the game and talents he possess.
